Why a referee headset improves performance

Research among more than 500 referees shows that by using a communication system, such as a ‘headset’, referees make faster and more correct decisions. They also indicate that a communication system can contribute to the honesty, sportsmanship and quality of the sport. We share the results and give practical examples.

The research among the referees was carried out by Axitour Communication Systems, supplier of communication systems in the sport. One of the most popular technical tools for referees is the wireless communication system also called ‘earphones’ or ‘headset’. Referees and officials can use it to communicate directly with each other via an open line connection, such as a telephone call.

Make faster and more correct decisions
Of the referees who are already using the communication system, 90% feel that they are making more correct decisions. A majority of 60% also indicates that they make decisions faster.

What does a referee headset bring the referee?
Referees who participated in the survey saw the following benefits:

• The arbitration team can support/coach each other during the competition
• The team can make decisions about more game situations during the game
• Fewer wrong decisions
• Radiating more authority/professionality

Referee couples
Almost all participants (over 95%) say that the use of an earpiece contributes to their own development as referees. An even higher percentage (97%) sees added value for the development of so-called referee couples. Collaboration with fellow referees and other officials improves through fast and direct communication. Referees also see this reflected in the training of beginning colleagues. The communication system helps to give recruits targeted feedback ‘in the moment’.
